My AlgaeCal Plus Review – Scam Or Does It Work? (Ingredients, Side Effects, Pros & Cons)

AlgaeCal Plus Review - Scam Or Does It Work?

It’s time for my AlgaeCal Plus review, which is another very popular bone supplement.

So does AlgaeCal Plus work – or is it rather a scam?:

  • decent ingredients
  • quite high price
  • several side effects

Well, we're going to analyze its ingredients, side effects, complaints and even more.

So let's find out the truth behind this product.

Note: This review is based on my opinion + research on AlgaeCal.

Review Summary

Full Name: AlgaeCal Plus by AlgaeCal

Product Type: Bone Supplement

Best Actual Prize: Starts at around $69

Cheapest Place To Buy: Its official website

Designed For: Increasing bone density through the following benefits:

  • provides bone nutrients
  • absorbs more minerals
  • strengthens the bones

My Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Recommended?: Yes and no – it's a decent supplement but it has several disadvantages:

  • not very easy to take
  • quite pricey
  • causes some side effects

If you're looking for an alternative, try the best bone supplement from the market instead.

What I Liked About It

  • Promising ingredients
  • Has a professional website
  • Credible background
  • A lot authentic reviews available

What I Didn’t Like About It

  • Pretty low doses (in some ingredients)
  • Quite pricey
  • Causes adverse effects
  • High serving size (4 pills/day)

AlgaeCal In A Nutshell

Firstly – let's mention that AlgaeCal has 2 versions:

  • Basic
  • Plus

But for this review, let's focus on AlgaeCal Plus, since it's more popular.

Now – AlgaeCal is a bone supplement made to increase bone density.

The formula is plant-based and it contains essential vitamins and minerals.

But there are some red flags about it:

  • some doses are slightly on the lower side
  • triggers severe adverse reactions
  • not easy to take (4 capsules/day)
  • pricier than it should be

Now – a bone supplement shouldn't cause some alarming side effects.

This situation doesn't always happen when taking AlgaeCal.

But it seems to be a bit more common than in other products.

Now – the price of one bottle is $69 (120 capsules), which is quite pricey.

So if you follow the suggested 4 capsules daily, it will last for a month.

However – considering its disadvantages, I don't think the price is worth it.

I still think that there are better alternatives out there.

I'm talking about some that are safer to use and they make a much better investment.

#1 – Claims & Producer

Let's first take a look at some of the basic info about AlgaeCal:

  • how it works
  • the health issues it helps
  • who is the company behind
1. Claims

AlgaeCal claims it “increases bone density by providing all nutrients your bones crave.”

For that to happen, here's what it does:

  • helps with calcium absorption
  • improves bone build-up
  • supplies with bone nutrients
  • strengthens the bones

The reason for the name AlgaeCal is the source of the product's ingredients.

Obviously – it comes from marine algae from South America.

Also, the “Plus” in its name is because of the addition of Boron.

Like I said – there are 2 different versions of AlgaeCal:

  • Basic
  • Plus

The only difference that I can think of is the overall formula (the Plus is a bit better).

But for this review, we will focus on AlgaeCal Plus, as it's more popular.

Other than that, AlgaeCal is said to be non-GMO, soy-free, gluten-free and dairy-free.

Overall – the product looks well, but I doubt it's the very best option out there.

2. Company Behind

Now – AlgaeCal Plus is made by a company with the same name (AlgaeCal).

If you go to its website, here's what you can see:

  • sells supplements for bones and blood
  • available on USA and Canada
  • other countries can buy through Amazon
  • contact info includes email, service numbers and mailing address

Overall – the company seems to be very popular among its users.

Also, a lot of customers already tried it and proved that it's legitimate.

So in my view, it looks like it's safe to buy from the brand.

#2 – Ingredients (6.5 out of 10)

If I had to describe AlgeCal's formula in one word, I would say it's decent enough:

  • contains vitamins and minerals
  • their doses are slightly lower than the average
  • but it's still promising overall

However – it doesn't seem like the best composition I have seen in a bone product.

So even if it looks decent, it's not amazing.

Again, the brand points out that its formula is based on the South American marine algae.

So let's take a look at the benefits of the ingredients present in AlgaeCal:

  1. Vitamin C – improves the formation of bone collagen [1]
  2. Calcium – keeps the bones strong and intact [2]
  3. Vitamin D – helps with the absorption of calcium [3]
  4. Magnesium – reduces the risk of osteoporosis and bone fracture [4]
  5. Vitamin K – maintains an ideal bone density [5]
  6. Boron – supports proper bone development [6]

Now – some ingredients have algas calcareas at the bottom of the label.

This actually means that they come from plan-based calcium.

If you ask me, these ingredients are part of almost any bone supplement.

So it's a good thing that AlgaeCal contains them – even though the doses aren't the highest.

But don't get me wrong, it's still a decent bone supplement overall.

Conclusion

To summarize, AlgaeCal is a competitive bone supplement.

So even though it might work slowly, you will still get benefits from it.

But if you ask me, there are better options that are more potent.

#3 – Pills & Dosage (5 out of 10)

Let me give you some important details about AlgaeCal in this chapter.

1. Pills

If you ask me, here's how I would to describe its capsules:

  • average-sized pills
  • white-beige color
  • formulated as vegetarian

In my view, the capsules look very normal – just like in most supplements.

2. Dosage

Here's the tricky part for some people who are not a fan of taking medicines.

Based on the usage instructions, AlgaeCal requires 4 capsules per day.

To be specific, you need to take 2 pills twice daily.

Also – there's a tip that if you want to decrease the dosage, take 3 pills instead.

Honestly, the product has a tendency to work slow – so it's better to take all 4 capsules instead.

Another tip includes slowly increasing the dosage (starting from 1 pill/day).

In my opinion, it takes quite a lot of effort to follow these tips.

Besides, AlgaeCal's regular serving size is quite high.

That's why taking 4 pills a day isn't extremely easy.

So I think there's a better alternative that's easier to take.

#4 – Results (6 out of 10)

To avoid giving you a biased view on this product, let's check out its customer reviews.

Also – I do this to feature how it work other people.

In this way, you get an idea on what you should expect from it.

Note: I only analyzed authentic reviews, not promotional or fake ones.

1. Positive Opinions

As usual – I chose to share the authentic reviews from Amazon.

So if you're curious, here's what people loved about AlgaeCal:

  1. A lot of customers noticed the increase in their bone density.
  2. Some said that it helped with their osteoporosis and osteopenia.
  3. Others liked the fact that it is plant-based and vegetarian.
  4. The rest mentioned that it works as it promises to.

Now – AlgaeCal got an overall rating of 4.6 stars out of 5.

It's a good rating actually – so it's a good sign that it works in most cases.

For this reason, it's definitely not a scam.

2. Negative Opinions

On the other hand, listed below are the complaints about AlgaeCal:

  1. Most of the buyers experienced some noticeable side effects.
  2. Others said that it took time to work.
  3. Some mentioned that it is expensive for its value.
  4. A few people didn't notice any difference in their bone density at all.

Now – I'm quite surprised about the common negative feedback.

I only expected to read comments about how slow it works.

But the number of complaints about side effects is quite high as well.

Conclusion

Overall – AlgaeCal has some quite mixed reviews from its previous buyers.

Some liked how it helped their bones and some complained about the side effects.

If you ask me, there are still better options that are effective and safe.

So I wouldn't necessarily recommend this supplement.

#5 – Side Effects (4 out of 10)

Again – AlgaeCal garnered a lot of complaints about its side effects.

So if you're curious, here are the bad experiences of some buyers:

  • elevated blood pressure
  • heart palpitations and acid reflux
  • hyperactivity and overstimulation
  • development of kidney stones
  • upset stomach and vomiting
  • itchiness and inflammation
  • diarrhea and anal leakage
  • insomnia and nausea

Now – these negative reactions are a lot more than what I expected.

I'm not saying they appear in all cases, not at all.

But there are some chances that you experience one of them.

Honestly – that's quite alarming and serious, which is not a good sign for a supplement.

So overall – I strongly suggest you to look for safer alternatives, if you want to be sure.

#6 – Price (4 out of 10)

I want to say right away that AlgaeCal is quite expensive.

So if you ask me, it's not the best option from the market.

1. The Exact Price

Now – let's feature the price list of AlgaeCal from its official website:

  • A month supply costs $69
  • 3 month supply costs $177
  • 6 month supply costs $294
  • Free shipping everywhere

Now – AlgaeCal's price isn't very low.

In fact, considering its quality – I think it's extremely expensive.

There are many other supplements with a stronger formula that cost a lot less.

Although AlgaeCal also available on Amazon, the offers there are limited.

Also – I want to mention that a month supply has 120 capsules.

So if you follow the 4 pills/day, one bottle will truly last you 30 days.

But honestly, it's not a smart option in the long run, since it will cost you more.

2. Competitors’ Price

Let me give you a very good alternative, it's my #1 recommended bone supplement.

The product I'm talking about is OsteoMD:

  1. OsteoMD has a superior form of calcium and some unique ingredients.
  2. The overall formula has the right doses to be potent and effective.
  3. AlgaeCal contains some essential ingredients for the bones.
  4. But some of the doses are lower than expected.
  5. OsteoMD only requires 3 capsules per day.
  6. Meanwhile, AlgaeCal recommends 4 capsules daily.
  7. OsteoMD costs $49.99 normally, but it can be bought for only $37.
  8. AlgaeCal's price starts at $69 for a one month supply.

If you compare the 2 supplements, OsteoMD is the better option.

It's superior in a lot of aspects and its price is more affordable than AlgaeCal.

So I think that it's the best investment for your money.

Conclusion

Overall – AlgaeCal might have some good features, but the price is not reasonable.

So if you ask me, there are other alternatives that have lower prices.

Plus, ther quality is not compromised and they actually work a lot better.

#7 – FAQs

Let me share with you the common inquiries about AlgaeCal.

Note: I might repeat something I already mentioned, but it's easier to spot here.

1. Where do you use this product?

AlgaeCal is a supplement for bone health.

It claims to increase bone density and calcium absorption.

Also, it promises to help with bone build-up and bone strength.

2. How should you take this supplement?

The usage instructions of AlgaeCal are quite tricky.

It requires 4 capsules per day.

You should take 2 pills during breakfast and 2 pills during dinner.

3. How many pills are there inside the bottle ?

One bottle of AlgaeCal has 120 easy to swallow veggie capsules.

So ideally, it should last you for 1 month.

Especially if you follow its suggested dosage (4 pills/day).

4. Are there any serious adverse effects?

Previous people who used AlgaeCal experienced some side effects:

  • increased blood pressure
  • acid reflux and heart palpitations
  • inflammation and itchiness
  • anal leakage and diarrhea
  • nausea and insomnia
  • vomitting and upset stomach
  • development of kidney stones
  • overstimulation and hyperactivity

The adverse effects listed above are quitre serious.

So you need to take note of that before buying it.

5. What's the best price for this product?

The original price of AlgaeCal is $69/bottle.

But you can get it for as low as $49/bottle if you buy the 6-month supply.

#8 – Final Conclusions

If you ask me, here's how I would summarize my points about AlgaeCal.

1. Decent Formulation

The overall formula of AlgaeCal contains vitamins and minerals.

It says to be plant-based and it provides essential benefits to the bones.

But if you ask me, some ingredients' doses are rather low.

So don't expect too much from it – though it's still effective.

2. Side Effects

As a bone supplement, it shouldn't cause any side effects (ideally).

But unfortunately, AlgaeCal got a lot of complaints here.

I'm not saying that it causes side reactions in everyone.

But you should at least get a warning.

3. High Pricing

Lastly – for its quality, it's quite expensive.

The price of a month supply costs $69 (120 capsules).

It will last for 30 days if you follow the recommended 4 pills/day.

Considering its quality, I personally believe it could cost a lot less.

My Verdict – Worth It Or Not?

Short answer: Yes and no – AlgaeCal is a decent bone supplement.

But there are some disadvantages about it:

  1. Alarming adverse reactions
  2. Low doses for some ingredients
  3. Pretty pricey
  4. Not easy to use (4 pills/day)

In my opinion, AlgaeCal is a decent bone supplement.

It has vitamins and minerals – but doesn't expect it to work fast.

Also – the side effects are not to most insignificant ones.

That's why I'm not a huge fan of AlgaeCal.

So if you're looking for a safer option, try my #1 recommended bone supplement.

The supplement I'm talking about is called OsteoMD:

  • Contains a superior form of calcium
  • Ingredients are unique and helpful
  • Recommended by a lot of specialists
  • Works safely and really well
  • Backed by scientific data

If you ask me, OsteoMD is the safer and more affordable bone supplement.

Overall – it's superior in most aspects, so I think it's the better option.

  1. Hi! I would like to share my experience with AlgaeCal. At first I was okay with it. It was so-so meaning not bad yet not good. I thought it like that because you know, I am just starting to take this supplement. However, as time went by, the so-so became bad because nothing really happened. I just wasted my time and money taking this product which is frankly not the easiest to take. So my realization is that: find a better product because this sure ain’t worth it.

    Illyin

    1. Hey Illyin, thanks for commenting! I’m sorry this happened and I totally agree that medicine should not be inconvenient to take. Sure, it can be quite easy to take for some but taking two pills at a time is not for everybody. It is common sense that medicine should be taken as instructed but there is always a choice to find better product/supplement to use and frankly, AlgaeCal is not “it”. This is especially true for our elderly. Taking two pills at once may be hard for them–more so on those advanced in age. But most of all, the product should be worth its quality. From your experience, I can feel that it is frustrating. The effect is not that great contrary to its claim. There are really a lot of better products out there and OsteoMD is one of them. Delve deeper about it if you are interested via the article link provided and see for yourself why we recommend it among others.

  2. I really hoped this works for me. Found out more about this product too little too late because I placed my order just now. I’m quite scared now because of the side effects you listed. I am really just hoping that it can help me improve my bone health. Since I was a child, I was already diagnosed to have weak bones. I am thankful that up until now nothing happened yet. As such, I am really taking this opportunity to increase my bone strength so that I would have no regrets. Thank you and I will get back here to share my experience after finishing my whole bottle.

    1. Hi Czarina, thanks for sharing about yourself. As we have stated in the article, it’s not the worse and not the best out there. Nevertheless, relax because being too anxious about it will bear no good. Honestly, like plenty of other instances, the effect also depends from person to person. In fact, you might not even experience any side effect at all. Our only purpose here is to provide quality review to help readers make informed decision. For now, give it a try but stop immediately if you feel any abnormality. I am really hoping that it works out for you and you get better.

Good luck and all the best!
      Angelica

  3. Hey Paula, it’s me again. I really did not like this product. It did not help me or whatsoever. In fact, the thing that I was most afraid of is that I experienced a side effects. Some days it was upset stomach and vomiting while on another it’s insomnia and diarrhea. Honestly, it couldn’t get any worse because I felt dying. I did not know what I did wrong. I know I did everything right so I just want to say that be cautious when taking this product. If you can help it, don’t buy it.

    1. How are you Czarina? This is Angelica. I’m so sorry that this happened to you when you were so hopeful about it. Just so you know, it’s not really your fault this happened to you. You were just hopeful and wishing for a good health. Are you okay now? I hope you stopped immediately after feeling those side effects… I really hope that you would consider going to the doctors if the side effects are yet to subside. Don’t feel remorseful about not finishing a product if you feel any bad reactions because your health is more important. Maybe there is no use in crying over spilled milk but you can definitely change that by making better decisions. I don’t know if you are still up for it but I really hope that you switch to OsteoMD if you would still brave it with the supplements. Please have a rest and take care.

  4. I’m wondering why the comments of others are saying bad things about this product. I mean, I feel like they are paid because I really felt better after taking this product. My bones are stronger than ever and aside from that, my overall health improved. I can be as active as much as I want now with no worries. Sure it is tiring to keep track and drink on time 4 pills a day but my commitment and goal kept me on my toes.

    1. Hey Waldo, this is Angelica. Yes, I get what you are saying. It’s nice to hear a positive experience with AlgaeCal and it’s even better now that you have a lot of health improvements. Actually, AlgaeCal is not that bad. As Paula has said in her Article, it’s not that bad. In fact, it has decent formula however, it’s just not the best and also has its own downsides, one of which is what you have stated. Aside from that, the safeness of a product is very important to us as well as its quality–qualities that are both found in OsteoMD. Hopefully, you health continues to improve. Continue to be active and thank you so much for the sharing.

  5. Hey Paula! I do agree with your verdict of this product. Firstly, it’s an okay product and it really does give some effect though it takes a long time. Our family has some problem with arthritis so bone supplements like this are really welcome. It is important to do preventive measure rather than do something when it’s already at its worse. Anyway, back to this product, it’s really pricey. I dont reallly know well about the ingredients but I can definitely say something about uts effect–and honestly, it’s not really something great contrary to its popularity. All in all, I definitely won’t go back to this supplement because I’d rather look for a effective albeit pricey supplement as long as it really gets its job done.

    1. Hey Frank, thank you for your feedback! Definitely look for a supplement that is worth your money, especially with the current situation all around us. It’s good that you are taking preventive measure. If I’m being honest, taking care of your wellbeing is the best counter and preventive measure. However, it also cannot be helped that there are also a lot of factors that affects us so some things just cannot always happen as we want to be. If that is what you are looking for, I really recommend OsteoMD, a bone health supplement that is worth every bit of its price. Check our review about it to know more about it. On the other hand, if you are looking for something to help with osteoarthritis, look into our list of best joint supplements.

      All the best,
      Angelica

  6. I have been taking algae plus for 6 months no side effects for me . Has a lot more in it than Osteo MD.

    1. Hey Rich, I’m glad to hear you didn’t experience any side reactions, that’s excellent. But I definitely don’t agree that it has a better composition than OsteoMD. I’m not going to state all the reasons why here – but you have all the explanations in my review of OsteoMD, so I really advise you to read it carefully and see.

  7. Thankyou so very much! I agree to many side effects I wish you could tell me about a thorne algae calcium \ Sapling product I’d like your expertise please!! Much oblige! laura T

    1. Hey Laura, glad to be able to help! I’m not sure which products you asked me about, because I couldn’t find any with this exact name. But I did find an Algae Calcium supplement made by Sapling, so I’m guess that’s the one you were curious about. Well, the product isn’t bad, as it contains vitamin D, calcium and vitamin K2 (as well as some magnesium, from what I understood, but the full label isn’t given out). Now:

      – Its vitamin D dose isn’t too high. It is indeed 100% of the daily recommended dose, but people with bone issues tend to have some low levels, so I usually recommend higher doses of vitamin D in everyone dealing with bone problems.

      – Its calcium dose is under the daily recommendation, which is not terrible, because we tend to take calcium from many foods. But it could be higher in this supplement, as people with bone issues are usually deficient in calcium, so they should supplement as much as possible. There’s no info about the exact form of calcium it uses, but I assume it’s the citrate (it’s the most common). But honestly, that’s not the best, because it has a higher risk of side reactions.

      – It also contains vitamin K2, which is indeed helpful, but its absorption is not the best.

Honestly, my top recommended supplement for bone health (OsteoMD) comes with some better version of all Sapling’s ingredients:

      – A high dose of vitamin D
      – A superior version of calcium (hydroxyapatite)
      – A much better version of vitamin K2 (MenaQ7)

Now, compared to AlgaeCal, Sapling’s product is clearly weaker. But AlgaeCal is also weaker than OsteoMD, so I feel like this should be your final option, judging after the features of all these 3 products. Hope you choose the right product!

  8. It’s crazy how anyone can write anything about a product nowadays, huh. I have been following this blog because I have a lot of doubt and I just cannot stay silent anymore. Who’s to say that you are legit? I smell money a miles away from you so for all the readers out there, do not believe anything written here. I have personal experience with AlgaeCal and it’s amazing. I’m 63 and I have never felt more alive and younger than now. Isn’t it basic to keep track and follow the instruction on how to take this? 4 pills is nothing compared to the diseases out there. Girl, do your homework properly.

    1. Hi Rolando, you are very much being rude right now. I know that we cannot always make everyone believe us but that does not mean you have the right to say that we are only in it for the money. If you check on the bios, you can certainly see what right and credentials we have. Sure it might have worked for you perfectly fine but what is written above is based on research and expertise. If you can notice, there are chapters with their own breakdown of information–the pros and cons–so that people can make an informed decision. We are not saying that this is a bad product but rather, there are downsides that people should be prepared of in cases wherein they decide to purchase AlgaeCal. And to be frank, yes it is a common sense to follow the instruction but you cannot speak for everyone. Maybe it is easy for you but for others with other medical condition, 4 pills/day might be hard.

We really consider a lot of factors when rating a product. We take into account as many as possible from its ingredients/composition up to the feedbacks of other customers. At the end of the day, we are not forcing anyone to buy our recommendations because believe it or not, we are not doing any paid promotion/advertisement.

      Sincerely,
      Angelica

  9. I have taken AlgaeCal for a little over 2 years. I did not experience any side effects (in fact my blood pressure went down significantly…don’t know if it is connected to A-C). I experienced relief from the aching pain in my hips within 2 months. After 2 years I had a DEXA scan and my spine improved about 10% and hips about 5%. I was very pleased with those results.

    1. Hello Tena, thanks a lot for sharing your experience with AlgaeCal, I’m so pleased to hear a positive story about this product!

  10. Thank you for providing your objective view on this. I really appreciate it. I bought AlgaeCal Plus with the Strontium Boost and started slow. I never started the Strontium yet. I’m always apprehensive when it comes to taking meds or supplements because I have a sensitive system and what might be a normal dose for some, may be too much for me.

I’m not sure if this product is the cause of a sudden spike in my blood pressure which tends to run low normally for me or not. But I’ve stopped taking it now to see how my body feels.

What are some of the other bone supplements you recommend? I don’t want to do bone drugs and want to take something as natural as possible.

    Thank you!

    1. Hello Jackie, I’m glad to hear you’re rather cautious when it comes to supplements and drugs. I totally agree that we tend to react differently to all sorts of products, so it’s better to stay on the safe side.

If you weren’t taking anything unusual when the blood pressure started raising, AlgaeCal might be the culprit. I always tell people that if they don’t change anything in their routine and a side effect comes up when you start taking a new product, it’s most likely because of it. We can’t tell for sure, but it’s probably around 95% that your increased blood pressure was causes by AlgaeCal.

My favorite alternative to AlgaeCal is OsteoMD, because I consider it superior from most points of view. But I compared them in a separate article, so you can see the exact differences in detail there. But I’ve had a lot of readers trying both and they thought OsteoMD was better for them, mostly in terms of results, but also when it comes to ingredients, quality and tolerance. Additionally to supplements, you can also try some other types of remedies for bones in general (not just osteoporosis, as the title says), whose effect might add up in the end.

Hope this helps and all the best for you!
