It's time for my Antarctic Krill Oil review – which is a very interesting Omega-3 supplement:
- many satisfied users behind
- increasing popularity on Amazon
- helpful for various issues
But is this product worth trying?
Or are there any better alternatives for the money?
Well – I tried to dig deep into this supplement, so here's what I discovered (+ video).
Note: This review is based on my opinion + research on Antarctic Krill Oil.
Review Summary
Full Name: Antarctic Krill Oil by Sports Research
Product Type: Omega-3 Supplement
Best Actual Price: Around $30/bottle
Cheapest Place To Buy: Amazon
Designed For: Inflammation and general health
Krill oil has pretty much the same benefits as fish oil:
- lowers cholesterol levels
- promotes heart health
- decreases joint pain and stiffness
- improves eye and joint lubrication
It's also excellent when it comes to promoting general health.
My Rating: 8 out of 1o
Recommended?: Yes and no. It's a good option in terms of krill oil products.
But I would go for a fish oil supplement instead (more benefits):
- higher doses of Omega-3
- more clinical evidence behind
- lower prices
I personally recommend a product with a stronger composition that costs even $15/bottle.
What I Liked About It
- Varied ingredients and a trademark substance
- Only 1 pill per day
- Pills are quite easy to swallow overall
- Many satisfied users and authentic reviews
- Pretty affordable price
- Available in many retailers
What I Didn't Like About It
- Low doses of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Mostly effective for minor health issues
- Pills leak pretty easily
- Expensive compared to a fish oil product (which is usually stronger)
What Is Antarctic Krill Oil?
First of all – you can guess what this supplement is (from its name).
And in terms of effect, it does pretty much what a fish oil/Omega-3 product would do:
- promotes general health
- prevents aging and joint problems
- decreases chronic inflammation
I personally am not a fan of krill oil – because it's weaker than fish oil, if you ask me:
- Lower doses of Omega-3 overall
- Higher price
- Less options to choose from
And that's exactly why Antarctic Krill Oil isn't an amazing product (at least in my view).
It's surely better than many krill oil supplements.
But compared to fish oil supplements – it's not that stronger, despite costing more.
#1 – What It Is & Claims
I will start my analysis by telling you some general things about this product:
- how exactly it works
- what it claims
- who is the brand behind it
1. Claims
First of all – Antarctic Krill Oil claims to have a superior quality:
- no fillers/artificial coloring
- sourced from the Antarctic Ocean
- advanced formula
Also – it claims to contain a higher quantity per pill than any other krill oil brand.
That's definitely true – but it's not an essential thing.
What actually matters is the quantity of Omega-3 (EPA + DHA) it contains.
And at this chapter – Antarctic Krill Oil is under many fish oil supplements.
That's an essential thing in terms of effect – so keep it in mind.
2. Company Behind
Antarctic Krill Oil is made by a brand called Sports Research:
- pretty reputable producer
- many varied supplements in its portofolio
- offer money-back guarantee for their products
I personally have never heard about this brand before, to be honest.
But after checking its official website, I would say it's a trustworthy company:
- detailed contact info
- professional website
- no hidden data
So in terms of reputation – Sports Research looks quite legit and authentic.
#2 – Formula (8 out of 10)
For a krill oil product, this supplement has a superior composition:
- contains trademark ingredients
- has an original formulation
- also has an improved absorption
In other words – its formula is better compared to classic krill oil products.
But the main compound inside krill oil are Omega-3 Fatty Acids.
And as an Omega-3 supplement, Antarctic Krill Oil doesn't look too good:
- contains some pretty low doses of Omega-3
- this means a weaker effect overall
But in order to explain it better – let's take a closer look at each of its 3 main ingredients:
1. Krill Oil
This supplement contains a trademark version of krill oil (Superba 2™):
- improved version of krill oil
- superior absorption
Now – the most active compounds from krill oil are Omega-3 Fatty Acids.
And Antarctic Krill Oil actually contains their top forms (EPA and DHA). [1]
But the actual problem is their dose:
- Pretty low quantities of both EPA and DHA (136 mg + 60 mg)
- Omega-3's percent is also quite low (240 mg)
Now – these ingredients surely have a really good absorption.
But this doesn't compensate for their pretty low doses.
Fish oil supplements also contain Omega-3 Fatty Acids – but in higher doses. Besides:
- studies proved krill oil requires a higher dose for the same effect [2]
- on the other hand, a lower dose of fish oil would do [3]
That's why I'm quite disappointed of Antarctic Krill Oil.
Considering its low doses – I doubt its effect would be very potent.
2. Phospholipids
This compound is important in terms of absorption.
Phospholipids help store fatty acids from krill oil – which makes them easier to absorb by the human body.
That's why it's a common ingredient in krill oil products.
3. Astaxanthin
This ingredient is a really strong antioxidant:
- decreases oxidative stress
- fights aging and consequent issues
- reduces chronic inflammation
In terms of benefits – Astaxanthin is pretty similar to Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
- Helpful for joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Promotes general health.
- Effective against high cholesterol.
But obviously – compared to Omega-3, it's not as potent.
Conclusion
Antarctic Krill Oil has a pretty good composition for a krill oil product.
But krill oil's effect is mostly based on the Omega-3 inside it.
And from this point of view, this supplement doesn't look great (due to its pretty low doses).
So if you want a good dose of Omega-3, I recommend going for a fish oil supplement instead.
#3 – How To Take It (9 out of 10)
Here are a few details about this supplement's pills and dosage.
1. The Pills
Typically, krill oil has a reddish (blood-like) color.
So as you can imagine – most krill oil supplement have this kind of shade.
That's why I personally am not a big fan of krill oil in general:
- most products are formulated as softgels
- they leak very often and can leave stains easily
Now – getting to Antarctic Krill Oil, things are pretty much the same as with classic products:
- Formulated as softgels
- Black cover with a red liquid inside
- Leak quite easily (according to reviews)
And there's one more thing I would point out.
The label boosts about the fact that these pills are smell free – there isn't even any fishy taste.
However, many reviews claim the pills smell pretty badly if kept at room temperature.
So keep this in mind if you decide to go for this product.
2. The Dosage
This is one of the biggest advantages of Antarctic Krill Oil:
- only requires 1 pill per day
- you can take it at any time
Most krill oil supplements require between 2-3 pills daily.
So Sports Research's product deserves to be praised at this chapter.
#4 – Results (9 out of 10)
In order to give you an unbiased view on this supplement – I checked out its Amazon reviews.
And as I expected, it has a high rate of satisfied users.
1. Positive Opinions
Antarctic Krill Oil has an average rating of 4.7 stars on Amazon – which is an amazing number.
So it's a real proof that it's not a scam.
Now – out of its satisfied users, most praises are related to:
- Reducing high cholesterol levels
- Improving mild joint pain
- Preventing age-related issues
- Healthier skin
Basically – most satisfied users were dealing with (rather) minor problems.
I couldn't find many praises from people with severe joint pain, heart issues or acne.
But even so, Antarctic Krill Oil is a supplement that works, considering its huge number of praises.
2. Negative Opinions
As it's normal, I also found enough complaints on this product:
- Capsules leaking and breaking easily
- High price for the value
- Bad fishy taste and smell
- Stomach pain and digestive side effects
- Weaker effect compared to other (fish oil) supplements
Now – these problems are surely true, since I found several reviews on each.
And I also agree with some of them.
But it's totally normal that not every user is satisfied with this product.
So this doesn't necessarily cancel its advantages.
Conclusion
Antarctic Krill Oil has lots of satisfied customers behind.
This might be because of its increasing popularity – or not.
As you might expect – it also has a bunch of complaints behind.
But even so, its satisfied customers rate is much higher overall.
However – I personally would not go for this kind of supplement (especially for serious pain issues).
If you want to get the most from Omega-3, go for a fish oil product with much higher doses.
#5 – Side Effects (8 out of 10)
Omega-3 supplements are usually quite well-tolerated.
However – Antarctic Krill Oil does have a few of complaints about side effects.
According to the reviews I found, the most common side effects it causes are:
- Stomach pain and cramps
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Bad breath
Still – there are many other reviews claiming this supplement didn't cause any side effect.
So I personally tend to believe it's quite safe overall.
It does cause secondary reactions in some people – but the per cent is quite low.
Plus – there is a way you can decrease the risk:
- Take the pills on a full stomach all the time
- This will prevent any digestive issues (which are the most common)
#6 – Price (7 out of 10)
For a krill oil supplement, Antarctic Krill Oil is quite affordable.
But even so – I don't think it's completely worth the money (in terms of value).
At least when there are some many alternatives on the market.
1. The Exact Price
This supplement's lowest price is on Amazon:
- Its standard price is around $30/bottle.
- You can get it for about $1 less if you sign up for auto-shipping.
- Shipping is free for most orders.
As I said – this price is pretty good for a krill oil supplement.
That's because krill oil products tend to be pricier than fish oil supplements (krill is typically harder to find).
But if you ask me – fish oil is a lot more valuable:
- higher doses of Omega-3 fatty acids
- more clinical evidence behind
- way more affordable
Considering what Antarctic Krill Oil contains – I don't think it's worth the money.
And I'm mostly saying this because of its low doses.
If you only want a krill oil product – I would say it's a pretty good deal.
But if you want a quality Omega-3 product, I wouldn't really recommend it.
2. Competitors' Price
I will only compare Antarctic Krill Oil with my #1 recommended Omega-3 supplement.
I'm talking about Optima Omega-3 from Nuzena.
First of all – I want to mention that Nuzena's supplement is a fish oil product.
While Antarctic Krill Oil is (as you can tell) a krill oil product.
However – both are Omega-3 supplements (Omega-3 is the responsible behind their effect).
So let's take a look at their price:
- Antarctic Krill Oil costs $30/bottle normally.
- With auto-shipping, you can get it for about $29/bottle.
- Shipping is free in most cases (if bought from Amazon).
- Optima Omega-3 costs $30/bottle normally.
- However, you can get it for about $15/bottle.
- This makes it the cheapest high-quality Omega-3 supplement.
- Shipping is also free for orders over $50 (worldwide).
Basically – I personally consider Optima Omega-3 as the best alternative to Antarctic Krill Oil.
That's because it has a much lower price for a stronger formula.
Antarctic Krill Oil is surely not a bad product at all.
But its formula is weaker and its doses are much lower (compared to Optima Omega-3).
That's why I wouldn't really go for it.
Conclusion
Antarctic Krill Oil isn't a pricey product – but it's not a very cheap one either.
And considering its quality/price, I wouldn't really recommend it.
It's surely a good krill oil supplement.
But as an Omega-3 product, it's not a very good one.
That's why I prefer a cheaper alternative with a stronger formula.
#7 – Availability (10 out of 10)
One of the best things about this supplement is that it's really easy to find:
- Its main seller is Amazon.
- You can also find it in other 3rd party retailers.
- It's also available on its official website.
Now – out of these sellers, I would probably recommend Amazon.
Price is pretty similar in all retailers (including its official website).
But Amazon has better features in terms of shipping and refunds.
Plus – it's more accessible to most people.
But speaking in terms of money – price is about the same no matter what seller you go for.
#8 – Antarctic Krill Oil In 3 Ideas
Here's how I would sum up my opinion on Antarctic Krill Oil.
1. Low Omega-3 Doses
This is probably the biggest issue of this supplement (in terms of formula).
Despite having a good composition – it contains some low quantities of:
- EPA
- DHA
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids in general
Since Omega-3 are the main responsible for its effect, that's surely not a good thing.
That's why I'm not a fan of Antarctic Krill Oil.
2. Only 1 Pill Daily
One of the best things about this product is its dosage:
- you only need to take 1 pill per day
- there's no recommended time
- pills are pretty easy to swallow
It's true that many people complain about a bad fishy aftertaste.
But this product's label claims that's not the case.
3. Good For A Krill Oil Product
I personally am not a fan of krill oil:
- not as potent as fish oil
- lower doses in most supplements
- way more expensive
That's why I strongly recommend you to choose a fish oil product instead of a krill oil one.
But if you really want a krill oil supplement – Antarctic Krill Oil is a pretty good choice.
Still – it's not that good as an Omega-3 supplement.
In that case, fish oil products make way better choices.
My Verdict – Worth Or Not?
Short answer: It depends.
If you really want a krill oil supplement – Antarctic Krill Oil would be a decent choice.
But it's not among the Omega-3 products I would necessarily recommend:
- Pretty low doses of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Not as potent as fish oil in general
- A bit expensive
As I said – it's not a bad product at all.
Its high number of satisfied users on Amazon are the best proof.
But in terms of effect and potency – I would say there are better choices on the market.
So I strongly recommend going for a fish oil product than for a krill oil one:
- better effect
- more evidence behind
- required daily dose is lower (for the same effect)
- much cheaper
What do I recommend instead? As you can guess – a fish oil supplement.
My #1 pick is a product from Nuzena (Optima Omega-3):
- Best quality/price from the market.
- Excellent formula with high doses.
- Really low price (up to $15/bottle).
- Possibility to pay in monthly installments.
So if you want the best Omega-3 supplement I know, that's what I would recommend.

Krill oil is much better than original fish oil, of course deeping on the name brand you buy, be sure when purchasing these products that they are all natural ingredients without other chemical mixed in which is bad ,because it destroys its natural nutrient, there are other brand names that good also cheap but with good quality as well, shop around like ebay or amazon and different websites, lets say a bottle is 1000 mg and is required 2 or 3 day only, just take 2 softgel thats it, no need to break it down or wait another 8hrs to take another, there is a saying you need 1ooo mg or more or 3ooo mg of any supplements to boost your immune system for 8hrs all day complete, dont take any thats less than 1000 mg. Yes, krill oil does leak because, depending on the heat, hot and humidity during the delivery time, specially in the summer time, the humidity will destroy its quality, any supplements you order thats in softgel or gel form be careful, you should only order in the fall and winter seasons were its always cold, this will keep the softgel intact, no leaks or broken, make sure you order more supplements to last longer if you like the name brand…
The problem with fish oil, they are totally expose to pollution and the quality is always the same bad and aren’t controlled or filtered from mercury not all of them are bad, but generally its been told time and time again.
The reason krill oil is perferrable in my opinion, because its very pure or concentrate I like the astaxanthin or zeaxanthin…
Fish will eat anything thats contaminate in the ocean…
One of my favorites too is Sea vegatables or sea veg so called, they trived on the water and grow, they live off the sunlight their growth is about 1 to 2 inches a day, they are also pure, dense or concentrated in form very, very, very nutrientional, you can’t eat them of course, but they come in capsule too, but some Asian islanders, like the Japanese they cook or steam them to keep the rich nutrient within tact..Sea vegg are recommended in my opinion.
Sea vegetables are harvested at sea and environmentally controlled against pollution in countries like Ireland, iceland and Norway ..these countries really care about how we feed food at sea..
Many people have question me about my age always many times when I been taking Krill oil and Sea veggy for many years..
Krill and Sea Vegetables have many advantages over land plants like ordinary vegetables and fruits and meat the likes..
Krill and Sea veggy both are pure, concentrated(densed) rich in nutritional stuff,of course both have bad smell and taste, can’t cook the sea vegg too, but the powerful nutrition you do not want to ignore…
Listen I am 40 yrs old, people say I look ageless about 21 yrs old, even I get embarrassed.
Thanks for your opinion, Joe.
Is Antarctic krill right for me ?
Hello Mary Lou, even though it’s not my top pick, Antarctic Krill Oil is definitely not a bad product. I prefer Optima Omega 3 from Nuzena, because it has some much better features for the price it offers, but Antractic Krill Oil has some advantages as well. So the choice is all yours – but if you can, go for Nuzena’s product instead, it makes a better deal overall.
Hope this helps!
